Sweet victory! And then a message from my Sheriff…

Yesterday, the OC’s premier investigative journalist, R. Scott Moxley, published an article about a residential burglary case I tried last week. The article recounts how officers bungled the case through either deplorable dishonesty, or an uncanny ability to forget exculpatory evidence that might have exonerated my client. Moxley’s article is here.

A few minutes after the article went online, I received an email from the Sheriff herself. She was requesting my endorsement. Her email began:

“Dear Friend,

When I took the job as Sheriff of Orange County in 2008, my first goal was to restore integrity and professionalism to the Department. We have done that. . . .”

Not quite, Sheriff.

While I’m certainly pleased that you’re not committing felonies in office, like your disgraced predecessor Mike Carona, you’ve got a long way before you declare, “Mission Accomplished.”

But thanks for keeping in touch, and I appreciate that you consider me a friend.
